Función del Seno Maxilar

El seno maxilar (uno de los senos faciales) se ubica en el hueso maxilar a los lados de las fosas nasales y debajo de la órbita ocular.

En este post hablaremos sobre la función del Seno Maxilar.

Los senos faciales son cavidades que están ubicadas en el hueso y cubiertas por  mucosas en su interior.

Existen senos frontales, etmoidales y los maxilares.

El seno maxilar es una de las cavidades que está conformada por los senos paranasales en el rostro, es la cavidad más amplia y tiene forma piramidal.

 

El Seno Maxilar

La parte superior del seno es el suelo de la órbita, la parte interna es la parte facial del maxilar superior por donde pasa el nervio orbitario inferior.

La pared posterior son los canales alveolares y  corresponden a la cara anterior de la fosa infra temporal y está relacionada con la fosa pterigopalatina.

La cara medial está formada por cartílago y se relaciona con el hueso etmoide y el cornete nasal inferior, la base del seno maxilar está relacionado con los alvéolos dentarios del primer molar y el segundo premolar.

Desarrollo del Seno Maxilar

El crecimiento del seno maxilar está condicionado por el desarrollo del hueso maxilar y el de los dientes.

En el transcurso del tiempo puede tener una forma alargada, ovalada o redondeada, que se mantiene hasta después de que salgan los primeros dientes, a partir de ese momento obtiene su forma definitiva, piramidal.

Se puede considerar que su desarrollo completo termina alrededor de los diecisiete años de edad.

El desarrollo suele ser asimétrico, siendo más avanzado normalmente en el lado derecho.

El crecimiento del seno no es uniforme, tiene una etapa de fuerte crecimiento en los primeros 6 meses en la vida, después de eso se detiene  hasta los 2 años y medio, fase de la primera dentición.

La segunda fase de desarrollo comienza desde los tres hasta los 10 años de edad, tras el inicio de la segunda dentición que transforma su estructura.

A partir de los doce años su cara interior llega al nivel de la base de la nariz, y se expande de manera lateral hacia los molares.

Después termina de crecer para alcanzar su forma definitiva. El meato medio posterior al nacimiento se incrementa muy poco en longitud, el hueco crece entre dos a tres milímetros en el segundo mes y un poco más en el noveno mes, pero hasta el décimo año no crece más y termina de desarrollarse por completo después de la pubertad.

¿Cuál es la Función del Seno Maxilar?

El seno maxilar se encuentra recubierto por una membrana especial que está formada por ciertas células que fabrican moco que es enviado hacia la nariz.

Esta clase de seno facial cumple la función de humidificar el aire y actúa como un envase de resonancia y así disminuye la presión en el cráneo, esto minimiza el peso de toda la cabeza.

También  renueva la capa mucosa de quince a treinta minutos, aproximadamente dos litros de secreciones elaboradas diariamente por la mucosa rinosinusal.

El drenaje de secreciones de los senos paranasales es debido a los cilios de las células epiteliales de la mucosa respiratoria, lo cual es unidireccional al ostium del seno maxilar.

Elevación del Seno Maxilar

 Es una técnica quirúrgica que tiene como objetivo aumentar el hueso en la arcada superior de la boda.

Así podemos conseguir una base ósea correcta en la que colocar los implantes dentales, cuando el paciente no tiene suficiente altura ni volumen oseo.

La elevación del seno maxilar es necesaria en zonas de  molares y premolares del maxilar superior, ya que cuando se caen estas piezas dentales la altura disminuye.

Si la altura no es la adecuada, hay que hacer este tipo de intervención antes de colocar implantes dentales.
