¿Qué es un curetaje dental?

El curetaje dental consiste en una limpieza profesional realizada en la clínica dental, necesaria cuando la limpieza diaria se queda corta a la hora de eliminar la placa bacteriana o sarro. Además ayuda a evitar ciertas enfermedades dentales que mencionaremos. A continuación te explicamos qué es un curetaje dental y para qué sirve.

Curetaje dental

El curetaje es un tratamiento odontológico con el fin de eliminar todo el sarro que se acumula por debajo de la encía, este se aplica ya en caso correctivo, es decir, cuando ya hay presencia de una enfermedad como la gingivitis y periodontitis para posteriormente pulir y alisar la raíz del diente.

Este procedimiento puede ser doloroso dependiendo del gravo de infección que presente el paciente, en tal caso si apenas está empezando la enfermedad se puede hacer hasta sin anestesia, sin embargo, si estamos en presencia de una infección muy grave lo más recomendable es aplicar anestesia para poder hacer una limpieza más profunda sin que el paciente presente molestias. 

Existen ciertas enfermedades bucales denominadas enfermedades periodontales como la periodontitis o gingivitis. 

Dichas enfermedades se presenta en 8 de cada 10 personas mayores de 35 años, lo cual hace que sea preocupante, sin embargo, no son enfermedades de alto riesgo si se tratan a tiempo, pero si sus síntomas suelen ser fastidiosos para la personas que las padezca. 

Gingivitis

Es una enfermedad leve que se aloja en las encías causando inflamación e irritación en la parte que rodea los dientes, haciendo que sea difícil ingerir alimentos. Esta es causada por una mala higiene bucal al no cepillarse los dientes frecuentemente o no utilizar hilo dental. Sin embargo, si no se realiza un tratamiento adecuado, puede generar una enfermedad más grave como la periodontitis.

Algunos síntomas frecuentes son encías inflamadas con colores rojos oscuros o violáceo, también sangrado de encías al cepillarse o usando hilo dental, el mal aliento y encías sensibles. En el caso de presentarse alguno de estos síntomas, es recomendable acudir de inmediato al odontólogo para recibir una valoración profesional y tratamiento si es necesario.

Otras de las causas o factores de riesgo que producen está enfermedad, es el consumo de tabaco, mantener la boca seca sin hidratación, falta de alimentos ricos en vitamina C, hasta enfermedades como el cáncer y VIH que causan sensibilidad en los dientes haciéndolos más propensos a enfermedades como esta. 

Periodontitis

Es una enfermedad grave que afecta a los tejidos blancos de las encías causándoles infecciones graves, que si no se tratan a tiempo pueden causar que los dientes se caigan o se pierdan. Al igual que la gingivitis, su principal causa en una mala higiene bucal, con síntomas cómo encías sensibles al tacto, encías muy inflamadas con un color rojo brillante, sangrado de encías al hacer actividades como cepillarse, utilizar hilo dental y hasta al ingerir alimentos. 

Importancia de una buena higiene bucal

La higiene bucal es igual de importante que una buena higiene corporal. Mantener nuestra boca limpia es vital para proteger encías y dientes y evitar enfermedades como las nombradas anteriormente. Es importante cepillarse los dientes después de cada comida, para eliminar residuos de comida que puedan producir bacterias. 

Diferencia entre curetaje y limpieza dental profesional

La limpieza dental profesional es un tratamiento preventivo que consiste en eliminar los acúmulos de sarro que existen en la superficie del diente, evitando la acumulación de los mismos y lleguen a afectar el interior de la encía. En cambio, el curetaje dental no es un tratamiento preventivo, sino que se realiza cuando la placa está afectando las raíces de los dientes.
